The original The Last of Us ended ambiguously, but did not require a sequel. However, Neil Druckmann and the team at Naughty Dog felt that there were more stories to be told in this world, and so the equally impressive The Last of Us Part 2. Unlike the first game, however, the sequel left many questions unanswered that required at least one more part.
The team was originally working on a multiplayer spinoff called The Last of Us Online, However, we know that the project has been abandoned and the team is focusing on single-player games again. One of these games is in fact The Last of Us, Part 3. While it was unclear at first, we can now say with certainty that a third chapter is on the way, but what other information did we manage to dig up while we were digging around Clickers? Release window
We know that The Last of Us Part 3 is being worked on at least some level at Naughty Dog, however we have no idea how far along it is or when we can expect it. Due to the incredible level of sophistication and attention to detail that the studio puts into its games, it is possible that we will not see The Last of Us Part 3 by 2027 or later.
Platforms
The only thing we know for sure is that The Last of Us Part 3 will be coming to PlayStation platforms, specifically the PS5. Unless the game takes so long that a next-gen system comes out and the team decides not to make it cross-generational, you can rest assured that it will be playable on your PS5.
Since both previous games have found their way to the PC, The Last of Us Part 3 probably will. Previous games have taken over a year to arrive on PC, and while things may change between now and the game’s release, it’s safe to assume that PC gamers will be waiting at least a full year for it to arrive on that platform.
Trailer
There is not a single trailer, screenshot or even concept art for The Last of Us Part 3. At the moment we have only a few words about its existence at the highest level.
The first real word about Naughty Dog’s work on single-player projects came with its announcement about the discontinuation of The latest from the Internet, In it, the studio explains: “We’re working on more than one ambitious, brand new single-player game here at Naughty Dog, and we can’t wait to reveal more about what’s coming next when we’re ready.”
With the publication of The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, We also have the making-of documentary called Grounded 2. At the very end, Druckmann spoke about a possible third entry. “I thought about it: ‘Is there a concept?’ And for years I couldn’t find that concept. But that’s changed recently. I don’t have a story, but I have this concept that is just as exciting to me as Ias exciting as IIis its own thing, but has a common thread for all three. So it feels like there’s probably another chapter to this story.”
Gameplay
Both The Last of Us Games follow a similar stealth-action gameplay style with limited resources and light horror elements. We suspect the third game will at least be based on the same foundation but include new weapons, enemies and mechanics, just as the sequel evolved over the course of the first.
Pre-order
The Last of Us Part 3 has only just been announced and isn’t even in development yet. It could be a long time before we see it, so pre-orders are still a long way off.
