The Blue Moon 2024 supermoon in August put on an epic show around the world and we’ve compiled some of the best photos to prove it.
The Blue Moon supermoon occurred on Monday, August 19, 2024, at 2:26 p.m. EDT (6:26 p.m. GMT), when the Moon was 100% illuminated. Moonrise times will depend on your observing location.
The full moon in August was a seasonal Blue Moon This means that it is the third full moon in a season in which there are four full moons. The term Supermoon refers to a full moon that occurs when the moon is within 90% of its closest approach to Earth during its orbit, according to NASA. The full moon in August will be followed by three more supermoons on September 17, October 17 and November 15.

Kevin McCarthy captured this detailed image of the Blue Moon supermoon on August 19 from Charlotte, North Carolina, just before the clouds rolled in.
“Because of the approaching cloud cover, I had to act quickly to get an unobstructed photo of the Moon,” McCarthy said in an email to Space.com. “This photo was taken handheld with a 150-600mm telephoto lens at full extension and cropped to show detail,” McCarthy continued.

“Today was a rainy day in Broward County, but the rain let up around 6 p.m. My target location was Fort Lauderdale Beach as it still seemed cloudy to the north and south,” Shislowski said in an email to Space.com.
“A small lunar dog was located south of the moon as it rose in the sky. Quite an active evening,” Shislowski continued.
