COLUMBIA, SC (WSAV) – The South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC) received an execution warrant for a death row inmate on Friday.
The execution warrant for Freddie Eugene Owens, 46, was served on the SCDC on Friday, the SCDC said in a press release.
Owen’s execution date is Sept. 20, the SCDC press release said. That date is set by law to be four Fridays from the date the department receives the execution warrant.
According to the law, Owens will be asked to choose his method of execution 14 days before the execution date, the press release said. The options available are lethal injection, electric chair and firing squad.
According to the Associated Press, this will be the first execution in South Carolina in 13 years. In July, the South Carolina Supreme Court declared the execution of death row inmates by lethal injection, the electric chair and firing squad legal, opening the door for a resumption of executions.
Owens was sentenced to death in Greenville County in 1999 after being found guilty of murder, armed robbery and criminal conspiracy. The SCDC said he robbed and killed Irene Graves, who worked at a Greenville supermarket, in 1997.
