UPDATE: In reference to this article, Rob Liefeld has faulted the use of the word “give up” in Bleeding Cool’s headline above, as it implies drama, which Liefekld says is not present. He says, “There is no ‘give up’. I will have completed the mission. I am needed elsewhere” and “It implies drama where there is none. I am not a young man and my time there was productive, but after DTU it is complete.” I disagree with this conclusion, but would like to clarify the issue. The original article continues unedited below.
UPDATE x2: Rob Liefeld also added, “In 2024, I’ll have 180 pages or more completed. I don’t expect to have 5+ years left to write/pencil/ink at this rate. Simply put, it’s getting harder. My Extreme Catalog beckons, takes priority. Maybe a few things from my bucket list in between, Hi Thundarr, but Marvel work on commission is not an option. The stuff I’ve done, stuff with my creations, has to do with equity. A FF run, a Wolverine story, not a smart use of the time I have left in the next 5 years.”
Previously, Rob Liefeld stated that the current Deadpool Team The comic, which he writes and draws for Marvel and whose first issue will be released next week, would be his last work on the character he created 35 years ago in New mutants Series with Fabian Nicieza. That spawned a series of solo and team-up comics over the decades, before adding action figures, clothing, a game, and now three movies. Yesterday, however, Liefeld went even further, declaring that this would forever be his last work for Marvel Comics.
In the past, he said. “I’m retiring from Deadpool. It’s official. Yes, after 33 years of not only introducing Deadpool but chronicling many of his most beloved adventures, it’s time for Deadpool Daddy to say goodbye. One of the fun things about getting older is that you can retire from things, so here I am. So I cooked up one last crazy Deadpool story for the good folks at Marvel and they responded with electrifying glee and I began production last month, due out in summer 2024. I often wonder what my life would be like if I had created and sold to Marvel not just Deadpool but Cable, Domino, Stryfe and many others. What if young Rob hadn’t taken on the challenge of adapting a title that was headed for discontinuance is one of the better alternate universe stories. It certainly changed my young career and created opportunities and record sales for New Mutants & X-Force. Creating and introducing the Deadpool Corps with Lady Deadpool & Dogpool was a great function of my midlife crisis in 2009. In 2015 I started Deadpool: Bad Blood, giving Deadpool his first graphic novel of his own and his only chart-topping (#1) to date, an accomplishment that earned me a round of congratulations from Marvel bosses that puffed out my chest more than Captain America’s! No other author has written and illustrated more Deadpool works, I will complete this journey with over 1000 pages along with my Mercenary Misfit. So I’m going to finish this final Deadpool story, and believe me, it’s a wild story, and call it a collaboration for the ages. It’s going to be fun! In case you’re wondering why now? That’s simple, I’ll be 57 at the end and my eyes still work, work continues to be going strong, I want to quit with the best effort I can muster. Hand-eye coordination won’t be there forever. I’ll go into more detail on my next Robservations podcast and look forward to taking this journey with you, the world’s biggest fans, who have always provided the best support a cartoonist could imagine. And that’s saying something!”
Now he’s looked at Marvel’s October 2024 ad and proclaimed, “Deadpool Team Up #3! You’re going to want to come along for the ride! It’s my last Marvel opus! Issue #1 comes out next Wednesday, August 28th!”
When asked if he could clarify that wording, he replied, “It’s my last time. I’ve had a great time with Marvel over the last few decades.” I think we should listen to his RObservatioins podcast to find out more…
