The North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) is asking the public to use the NHS 111 online service over the summer bank holiday weekend.
This is because telephone lines are traditionally busier on public holidays due to the limited availability of GPs and pharmacies.
NHS 111 can be accessed online at 111.nhs.uk. It provides the same information and advice as the telephone service, without having to wait to speak to a health adviser.
Access is also possible via the NHS app.
The 111 online number is not suitable for enquiries about patients under five years of age, but parents or guardians should still dial 111.
Vicky Worrall, Integrated Call Centre Manager – Call Handling, said: “Bank holidays are always the busiest time for NHS 111 call centres.
“Even if we ensure that more staff are deployed, there may be longer waiting times.
“If you have multiple symptoms, choose the one that bothers you the most. You won’t get a diagnosis, but you will be told what help you need.”
Dr Paula Cowan, regional medical director for primary care at NHS England – North West, said: “NHS 111 online should be the first port of call for anyone needing urgent medical advice as it is quick and easy to use.”
“It connects people with the right service for their needs and provides medical advice.”
Dr Cowan also said some GP surgeries and pharmacies would have reduced opening hours over the August bank holiday, with many closing from 6.30pm on Friday 23 August until the morning of Tuesday 26 August.
She added: “However, some pharmacies will remain open over the holidays and people will be able to seek advice from the pharmacy on a range of minor ailments and health problems.”
