An emergency containment order is in place for areas in Durham and police presence is increased in the event of violent unrest in the historic city.
Durham Police had an increased police presence throughout the day and a seating order has been in place in the city centre since midday.
In addition, powers under sections 60 and 60AA have been approved, giving officers enhanced ability to stop and search people and the power to order the removal of face coverings designed to disguise or conceal a person’s appearance.
The police will do everything in their power to identify individuals who come to the city with the intention of causing trouble and any such individuals will be dealt with severely.
