Plant now for brilliant fall colors – Shaw Local

One of the many joys of gardening is the ability to plant beautiful plants throughout multiple seasons. The experts at Countryside Flower Shop, Nursery & Garden Center in Elburn agree that in addition to spring and summer, fall offers numerous opportunities for gardening.

Many annuals can thrive into fall, but those that die back can be replaced with vigorous chrysanthemums for autumnal splashes of color. Other cold-loving flowers include snapdragons and pansies. Ornamental grasses and kale thrive when temperatures drop.

Planting shrubs and trees in the fall can be ideal because nutrient-rich rainfall is more abundant and helps plants develop strong roots for the winter.

Think about perennials that are still available. Planting them now will give you a head start on next season’s garden and allow you to enjoy a fuller garden this year. Varieties to consider for optimal color include bee balm, daisies, peonies, roses and hostas. Daylilies are considered the “perfect perennial” because they are vibrant, hardy and can tolerate temperature and humidity fluctuations.

Fall vegetable gardening can also yield fruit, even in Midwestern weather. Plants that can be planted in mid- to late summer include radishes, broccoli, and many greens, including lettuce and chard. Consider planting container gardens with greens and chrysanthemums for a festive, edible arrangement that you can bring indoors before the first frost.

The Farmers’ Almanac The first frost is expected to hit the area on November 1st, so there are still many weeks of gardening ahead. Now is the time to collect and preserve fruits and vegetables, herbs, and plant bulbs for next year. Some annuals, such as dahlias, can be pulled out and their tuberous roots saved for planting next spring.
