Oprah Winfrey considered a cameo in “The Color Purple”

Oprah Winfrey has revealed that she has considered making a cameo appearance in the musical version of “The Color Purple.”

The former talk show host, who was nominated for an Oscar for her portrayal of Sofia in Steven Spielberg’s 1985 film, served as producer of the new musical adaptation directed by Blitz Bazawule.

In a recent interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Winfrey admitted that she decided against making a cameo appearance because it would have been “distracting” for viewers.

“(A cameo) would have been good in the church scene, but I thought it would also be distracting if Sofia was getting married and the old original Sofia was just one of many people in the church,” Winfrey explained.

“And then they shot it in the middle of Georgia when COVID was spreading. Like, ‘OK, I’m not sitting in this church all day anyway,'” she added.

Sofia is played by Danielle Brooks, star of “Orange Is the New Black,” in the new musical. She and her co-star Fantasia Barrino are currently nominated for Golden Globes for their performances.

The film grossed $18 million (£14 million) at the box office when it opened on Christmas Day in the US – the second biggest Christmas Day opening ever recorded in that country.

“The Color Purple” will be released in UK cinemas on January 26th.
