SOUTH MILWAUKEE, Wisc. — The South Milwaukee School District is preparing to launch its new STEM program by adding three teachers to its elementary schools to teach grades kindergarten through fifth grade.th Grade 10 students learn everything about science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
“The space around us that looks kind of empty now is going to be filled with their thoughts and ideas and the things that really excite them,” said Deidre Roemer, superintendent of the South Milwaukee School District.
Katy Casleton, Jolene Wasilewski and Jennifer Haynor joined the STEM team after South Milwaukee voters approved a referendum earlier this year.

Over the next five years, two million dollars will be invested annually in expanding educational initiatives such as the STEM program, as well as in operations, maintenance and school safety.
“When I saw that they were opening up this position in South Milwaukee and introducing STEM into elementary school, I was overjoyed. Words cannot describe how excited I was,” Caselton said.
“It was a really exciting summer for us, working together to get this whole thing up and running,” said Wasilewski.
Teachers say they are currently going through the lessons trimester by trimester and would like to work with their students to guide the further development of the curriculum.
“I know how important it is to bring the real world into the classroom and help kids understand how all the content they learn in regular classes can be integrated into amazing problem-solving, team-building and learning opportunities,” Haynor said.
Roemer says she is excited to give some of our community’s youngest residents the chance to think about the future at a young age.
“We want to make sure they are curious and discovering new things and that they realize that the skills they develop in school can be transferred to real jobs,” says Roemer.
