Caretaker Home Minister Lt. General (retired) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said on Sunday that law and order in the country had gradually improved.
“Although the law and order situation is improving, we are facing some challenges due to ongoing unrest among various professional groups,” he said during a meeting with French Ambassador to Bangladesh Marie Masdupuy at the Secretariat in Dhaka.
The discussion also covered topics such as law enforcement reforms, confiscating illegal weapons and addressing security concerns.
Responding to concerns about looted weapons from police stations following the resignation of Sheikh Hasina’s government, the Interior Minister announced plans for a special operation to recover illegal weapons.
Jahangir Alam also mentioned that action would be taken against the misuse of licensed weapons issued during the previous government.
On the subject of police reform, he acknowledged that police officers are often under considerable pressure due to a lack of rest breaks.
He confirmed that there are plans to restructure the police force, but these initiatives are still in their early stages.
He added that the reforms would gradually be extended to other Interior Ministry forces in addition to the police.
Also present at the meeting were senior officials from the Ministry of Interior and Deputy Head of Mission Guillaume Audren de Kerdrel from the French Embassy in Dhaka.
