Last week, we learned that starting quarterback Geno Smith and his representative have been attempting to talk to the Seattle Seahawks front office about a new contract. This came via NFL Network reporter Mike Garafolo in an appearance on Jason Puckett’s podcast. Shortly afterward, Smith deleted his personal Instagram page of any photos or mentions of the Seahawks, sparking speculation that he may have a contract dispute with the team.
Good news: Smith is back to posting on Instagram. This morning, Geno shared three photos from the Seahawks’ recent practice sessions, which seems to contradict the notion that he has serious disagreements with management.
*Voice of Stephen A. Smith* BUT: At the end of Smith’s post, there is another photo that is not from one of Seattle’s recent training camps in the VMAC. The last image in the video shows a younger version of Geno Smith graduating from elementary school wearing a gown and hat.
The conspiracy theorists among us might see a hidden message in this last photo, especially since it shows three photos of Smith in a Seahawks uniform. One could interpret it as a message that Smith intends to graduate from this franchise after three years as starting quarterback, i.e. at the end of the coming season.
Smith has one year left on his contract after this year, so it won’t happen unless the Seahawks allow Smith to “opt out” and move to another team. For now, that idea should probably stay in the X-Files where it belongs. It will be interesting to see what happens next offseason, though.
