Cavan Biggio, former top player for the Toronto Blue Jays, has signed with his third team of the season, this time the San Francisco Giants.
According to Alex Pavlovic, who covers the Giants:
The Giants signed infielder Cavan Biggio and sent him to Triple-A. He was recently released by the Dodgers.
Biggio was designated for transfer by Toronto earlier this year before being traded to the Dodgers.
Overall, the 29-year-old has a batting average of .197 with five home runs and 19 RBIs this season. He has stolen two bases.
Cavan, the son of Hall of Famer Craig Biggio, was selected by the Blue Jays in the fifth round out of Notre Dame in 2019. He made his major league debut in May 2019 and was expected to join Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette on the Blue Jays’ next great team.
Although Toronto made the playoffs in 2020, 2022 and 2023, Biggio was never able to truly establish himself. He hit 16 home runs in his rookie year but never more than nine after that. His life’s work is a .225 hitter who hasn’t hit above .235 since the COVID-shortened 2020 season.
The Giants will give him the chance to play as a minor league reserve for the rest of the year, with a chance of a spot opening for him in 2025. Matt Chapman, for example, is expected to decline his player option and re-enter free agency, which could open up a third-base position.
The Giants are engaged in a weekend series against the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park.
