Donald Trump posted a TikTok video in which he is seen holding up a pair of handcuffs while discussing plans to improve national security.
The TikTok video also features the theme song from the popular police drama “Law and Order” playing in the background. The video comes just a day after a Democrat aired a parody of the same show, taking aim at Trump’s legal troubles.
In his video, Trump said: “We are a nation in decline, nobody is safe, absolutely nobody. We will be a strong nation again, we will be a safe nation again.”
Then he said, “That’s for sure,” as he held up the handcuffs.
In the Democrats’ clip shown at the DNC on Monday, a spokesperson talks about Trump’s past encounters with the law and Kamala Harris’ work as a prosecutor, and urges voters to “vote for justice, accountability and the rule of law that keeps America free.”
It included allegations against Trump of sexual assault, criminal tax fraud, his involvement in the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, and his conviction on 34 counts earlier this year.
Since taking over the Democratic nomination from Joe Biden, Harris has repeatedly pointed to her past as a prosecutor and positioned herself as the best candidate to fight crime compared to Trump, pointing to his recent capital crime convictions.
Trump also delivered a speech at the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office in Howell, Michigan, on Tuesday, where he said Harris would “bring crime, chaos, destruction and death,” adding that if she becomes president, there would be “a level of crime like you’ve never seen before.”
Trump also said he would protect law enforcement and ensure “law, order, security and peace.”
After talking about how the “Marxist left has waged a war on law enforcement for the past four years,” Trump continued, “Since Comrade Kamala Harris took office, her administration’s crime statistics show that under her leadership there has been a 43 percent increase in violent crime. These are all government numbers.”
The Council on Criminal Justice’s 2024 Mid-Year Report shows that violent crime rates are at or below levels seen before the COVID-19 pandemic.
The report finds that there were 2 percent fewer murders and 15 percent fewer robberies in the first half of 2024 than in the first half of 2019.
Newsweek has emailed Trump and Harris’ campaign team asking for comment.
