DOING ALRIGHT at the Gateway Theater

Actress and comedian Nicole Travolta lets her demons rest in a cathartic monologue that will break her shame spiral and hopefully help others in similar situations. She’s a little weighed down by her famous name (her uncle is John Travolta), she comes from a broken home, had a bad marriage and is a compulsive, debt-ridden shopaholic. In a short, brutally honest and very funny whirlwind, Travolta describes the details of her recovery.

Review: DOING ALRIGHT at the Gateway Theater Image

With the help of some cute projections of old commercials, Travolta throws in impersonations (of Sarah Jessica Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw, Drew Barrymore and Jennifer Coolidge) and tells some very saucy anecdotes about her surrogate career as a self-tanner in the weird Hollywood scene and, ultimately, a path to redemption from the clutches of debt and low self-esteem.

Acting is in her blood. With roles in the TV sitcoms “Two and a Half Men” (CBS), “The Middle” (ABC) and “Anger Management” (FX), Travolta worked with the improv group The Groundlings, where she pitched the idea for the show to Lauren Burns, who agreed to direct and co-write “Doing Alright.” Travolta’s work has been shown at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Off-Broadway.

Travolta has an engaging kinetic energy and can easily connect with her audience. Many can relate to the urge to spend money they don’t have by simply extending a loan. Burdened with enormous debt and legal battles, the stories of her crazy tanning clients provide plenty of fodder for comedy, if somewhat childish in nature. But that’s the nature of the spray tanning business and Travolta uses this madness to get ahead financially and get back to what really motivates her – comedy and connecting with her audience.
