Wasn’t the 85th anniversary just the day before yesterday? The eightieth before that? The seventy-fifth right before that. It hasn’t really been that long since their fiftieth anniversary, has it? Yes, it’s time to feel old.

Major Malcolm Wheeler Nicholson formed National Allied Publications in 1934 and published their first comic book, New Fun: The Big Comic Magazine #1, in 1935, using original strips rather than reprints. Doctor Occult, created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, appeared in #6 and was considered the first superhero of what would become the DC Universe. The group became Nicholson Publishing in 1936, which led to the publication of Detective Comics in 1937, the origin of the publisher’s final name, DC Comics.
