Night Club 2 #1 marks the welcome return of the most unique Millarworld titles that debuted last year.
Three high school students were turned into vampires and used their skills and newfound powers to become social media stars – and part-time heroes.
The trio became a duo when Sam realized that his true love Amy was interested in her boyfriend Danny. However, that didn’t stop Night Club from joining the Big Game as a whole.
As usual, author Mark Millar juggles multiple titles, but with Night Club 2 #1 there are no signs that he is taking on too much.
Millar writes about teenagers exceptionally well because he doesn’t try to write them the way an adult thinks teenagers speak. They are simply written like normal characters who happen to be younger.
Starguard and Yellowbird are after a major crime boss and, in a welcome departure from the norm, the local police do not treat them like criminals but rather are friendly towards them.
Sam is busy using his abilities to become the star of the high school basketball team, which seems more realistic than a kid being bullied into using his powers to become the most popular boy in school. At least until the crime boss notices Sam’s actions and potentially puts the nightclub on a collision course.
MORE:
A rarity for a Millarworld title: Millar is working again with the artist of the previous volume, Juanan Ramirez. This is a welcome bonus, as Night Club 2 #1 benefits from visual continuity. Ramirez has created a strong story flow and the art design remains at a very high level.
Fabiana Mascolo works with strong, vibrant colors that harmonize well with each other. Letterer Clem Robins ensures that the dialogue remains easy to read by placing entertaining sound effects.
The only criticism of Night Club 2 #1 is the random mentions of DC and Marvel characters. Sure, the references make sense, but the Millarworld universe has enough cool characters that the respected Marvelous competition doesn’t need the mentions.
With an intriguing premise for this new volume, “Night Club 2 #1” shows that the series has lost none of its excitement.
