Albert Cesare/The Enquirer Caroline Garcia collapses on the court after winning the women’s final of the Western & Southern Open at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio, on Sunday, Aug. 21, 2022. Garcia defeated Petra Kvitova 6-2, 6-4.

Caroline Garcia highlighted some of the insults she has suffered in recent days following heavy defeats and took to social media on Wednesday morning to campaign against the practice.

In a post on Twitter/X, Garcia shared a selection of messages she has received following recent losses, including her first-round loss at the US Open to Renata Zarazua on Tuesday.

Following the unexpected 6-1, 6-4 loss to lower-ranked team Zarazua, Garcia shared several abusive messages she had received, such as “You are a piece of shit” and “I hope your mother dies soon.”

Garcia, 30, expressed his dismay at the overall situation and was particularly concerned about younger players who are not yet prepared to deal with online hate.

“We are human. And sometimes when we receive these messages, we are already emotionally devastated after a tough loss. And they can be damaging,” Garcia wrote. “…It really worries me when I think about the young players who have to go through this. People who are not fully developed as human beings yet, who could really be affected by this hate.”

She also addressed the issue of gambling in sports and how this may contribute to the abuse faced by players.

“Tournaments and sports continue to partner with betting companies that continually lure new people into unhealthy bets,” she wrote. “…Here we are promoting betting companies that are actively destroying some people’s lives.”
