Booze Hound: Fansville Diesel at Bearded Iris | Booze Hound

Fernet is divisive. With its minty, licorice-forward flavor, the Italian amaro—best known in most American markets under the Fernet-Branca brand—tastes like Essence of Black Jelly Bean toothpaste to some drinkers. Others just can’t get enough of it. Most bartenders I’ve met are in the latter camp; so is my better half. Let’s just say we’re a divided house.

Anyone who agrees with my friend on this point should take their damn taste buds to the West Side branch of Bearded Iris Brewing. There are many reasons to visit the brewery in the converted space of Sylvan Supply. The main ones are: Bearded Iris’s wide selection of original beers, as well as the Black Dynasty Secret Ramen House. (Black Dynasty operates out of the brewery and offers some of the best ramen you can find in the whole city.) But also, if you’re one of those Fernet people, you’ll find the Fansville Diesel, a brew that, according to one bartender, “started as an inside joke.” With Fernet, Dr Pepper, and lager—often Bearded Iris’ bright and crisp pep talk—the Fansville Diesel tastes like… well, it tastes like Fernet, Dr Pepper, and lager. Maybe that appeals to you. Maybe it doesn’t. Maybe you should see it for yourself. (Please note: The Diesel is not available at Bearded Iris’ Germantown location.)

No matter what you think of the Fansville Diesel, Bearded Iris Sylvan Supply is a great hangout. There are enough TVs to keep you up with every game, but not so many that you can’t turn them off if you want to. There’s plenty of space, outdoor seating, laid-back DJ sets, impromptu vinyl events, the aforementioned top-notch ramen… and a peculiar Fernet drink that I might like one day.
