The Blue Mountain Eagles defeated the Schuylkill Haven Hurricanes 19-14 as both teams opened their 2024 seasons. Points on both sides came only in the second half of the game, with the Blue Mountain scoring through Hunter Blankenhorn, Gaige Guers and Brady Strause.
While the Hurricanes moved the ball forward with passes from Brayden Fasnacht to Niko Castillo and a fumble recovery by Triston Davis, they were unable to reach the end zone in the first half. The Eagles were also on the move, but the Hurricanes showed defensive strength in the first 24 minutes of play.
Blue Mountain’s Tyler Stahley was able to get the Eagles going with a 53-yard run and put his team in good position. Hunter Blankenhorn finished the drive with a 9-yard touchdown. The Hurricanes fought back on defense and tied the game at 6-6 with an interception and a touchdown by Niko Carestia. At the end of the third quarter, receiver Gaige Guers caught a long pass from quarterback Brady Strause and put the Eagles ahead 13-6.
Sophomore running back Colton Reber put his team back in the lead early in the fourth quarter with a 23-yard touchdown and a successful two-point conversion. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough for the Hurricanes, as Blue Mountain’s Strause scored from 1 yard out to reclaim the lead. The Eagles’ defense held the Hurricanes in check for the final six minutes of the game, securing their first win of the season.
Blue Mountain head coach Tom Gallagher and his Eagles will face Jim Thorpe next Friday, while Mike Farr and his Schuylkill Haven Hurricanes will face Panther Valley.
